My name is Aram Saroyan Armstrong. I am a systems thinker, design educator, and creative facilitator.

I started Generative Ventures in 2015 as a platform for sharing my design practice, teaching creative arts, sharing systems thinking, and supporting resilient communities.

I am passionate about addressing the systemic challenges facing society. I have been blessed to have been deeply immersed in Hawaiiʻs food system and education system over the last two years, operating at the grassroots level as a practitioner, and at the 100,000 foot level as a visual strategist.

Last year, I worked with UH Maui College to understand the systemic challenges at the root of Hawaiiʻs shortage of STEM teachers for TeachSTEMinHawaii.

I am working with a team of academics, researchers, and designers to develop a state-wide food system map for Transforming Hawaiiʻs Food System Together.

I also volunteer Save Maui Wetlands, the Honomanū Restoration project, and Maui Mediation Services.

Upon returning to Maui in 2020, I joined Food Security Hawaii’s Maui ʻOhana Gardens initiative and Simon Russell’s campaign for State House District 12.

In 2019, I was an embedded strategist and design sprint facilitator at Starbucks working between the digital marketing team, the UX design and iOS mobile app development teams with Starbucks' human-centered design team.

In 2013-2015, I was a core member of Fung Academy leading knowledge sharing, innovation and experimentation initiatives within the Fung Group’s leadership development programs as a designer, innovation coach, and workshop facilitator.

I spent 7 years at IDEO as an Interaction Designer doing design and research for new products, services and experiences for a wide range of organizations including American telecoms, Chinese manufacturers, and both the US and Singaporean governments.

I have worked and taught internationally with students and clients from across South America, Asia, Europe, the US and Australia gaining fluency in drivers of change and culture.

I hold a Master's degree in Interaction Design from the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, Italy, and a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts in Interactive Media from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

Outside of the studio, I achieved my light green cord in capoeira angola at Seattle Capoeira Center under Grand Mestre Nô and Mestre Mangangá. I was attuned to reiki level 3 by Daisy Thompson at Northwest Healing Studio in Seattle, and I completed a 200 hour yoga teacher training at Durga’s Tiger School in Ecuador under the guidance of Iris Disseʻs team.

I have 25 years of professional experience working at the cutting edge of media, technology, and design in multinational-multicultural environments.

I feel this makes me a uniquely qualified, informed, and inspired as a son of Maui and a student of the World to be a powerful, caring catalyst for the transformation Maui County needs to thrive in the 21st Century.

Mahalo for your time, attention, and kind consideration.
